Dreamtime Art Creations

Artwork by Philip Viola

I strive to make visible how the world touches me—to share some of the child-like awe in what I see. The work challenges me to see deeply, feel intensely, and communicate something universal.

STATEMENT

My art practice begins with how I see and photograph the environment, letting visual elements which might typically be overlooked speak to me—a small ripple in a pond, a mysterious shadow pattern in the bark of a tree. A conversation unfolds like a curtain lifting to reveal something unexpected, yet somehow familiar. Using Studio Artist software, I look for specific, abstract vocabulary which continues my conversation with the image as it evolves further. My art, in both its digital and printed form, invites viewers into the journey to find their own interpretation.

Individual reality is an interaction within a fog of possibilities, presenting more data than we can perceive. Humans have pattern-seeking brains, and vision samples as much as it can while the brain fills in missing pieces from personal and cultural conditioning. This inclination to “fill in” missing pieces informs my process, as does my belief that we each are unique, emergent expressions of the universe itself, and that how we see the world transforms our relationship with it. Through my art, I aim to challenge first impressions and offer different and deeper ways of seeing.

“The most important aspect of painting is not the imitation of nature, but the transfiguration of perceptions into an enduring image.”

—Henry Matisse
